College and Corrections FLC Poster

Poster text: Top Left quadrant: Prison higher education programs take many forms. Some provide non-credit workshops or courses, while others offer full degree-granting programs (e.g., AA, BA). Classes are conducted inside correctional facilities in partnership with those agencies. Research shows that people who engage in college programs in prison have lower recidivism, better job prospects, higher social mobility, and other positive outcomes. Lower Left quadrant: The Athens Prison Tutorial is a UGA student-led organization that provides tutoring to incarcerated individuals in the Athens community, including GED materials, standardized test prep, and supplementary education. The Georgia Prison Beekeeping Program provides participants the opportunity to increase their knowledge about all things dealing with bees and beekeeping. UGA’s prison beekeeping programs started in 2015 and continues to provide education and testing at eight prisons. Top Right quadrant: Common Good Atlanta holds higher education classes in Georgia State Prisons. UGA faculty and students teach and tutor at Whitworth Women’s Facility in Hartwell, Georgia. English writing students collaborate with the Whitworth students through ENGL 3851S Writing for Social Justice. The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program brings college and incarcerated students together in a correctional setting to learn with and from each other. UGA faculty teach Inside-Out at the Clarke County Jail (SOCI 4470S & PHIL 3700S). Lower Right quadrant: Our FLC seeks to expanded prison education programming at UGA by exploring models at peer and aspirational schools and networking with corrections agencies to form new partnerships. Other SEC schools have prison education programs, including one with AAU membership, the University of Texas. Next year, our FLC will continue working towards establishing credit-bearing courses, formalizing UGA-corrections partnerships, and engaging with faculty interested in prison teaching.
