A surrogate’s job is to make their candidate look like the better candidate.

Apparently, Trump’s Surrogates have done their job.

The Surrogate Gaffe Factory

A Surrogates role in a campaign is to help the Candidate be in multiple places at once, and spread the campaign’s reach across the country.  If done correctly, they can maximize a candidate’s time.  In this campaign, a surrogate seems to spend most of their time explaining what Trump had meant to say.  Gaffes are a little nugget of goodness that the media and general public rightfully love.  They are usually an unforced error that comes when you least expect them.  Trump has set a high bar for his surrogates to live up to in the Gaffe department. However, his campaign surrogates did find a few moments to shine over the last year. Let’s take a look at a few of the gaffes that most surrogates would’ve prevented, but Trump’s crew swam in.

The Good:  Ben Carson on The View

In March as a guest on The View, Host Joy Behar referenced an attack ad that Trump used in the Primary race comparing Carson to a child molester. Joy said Carson would have to call Trump a Liar unless he was ready to call himself a child molester.  She followed it up by asking “Do you want a liar for the presidency?”

Instead of defending Trump, Carson replied, “Tell me a politician who doesn’t tell lies.” Which is arguably a true statement, but not the right time.

The Bad: Eric Trump defending his Father not releasing his Tax Return

Last month in an interview on CNBC Trump’s son, Eric, was defending his father’s decision to not release his tax returns by saying,”You would have a bunch of people who know nothing about taxes trying to look through and trying to come up with assumptions on something they know nothing about. It would be foolish to do.” As with most gaffes, this is probably a true statement. However, implying that most people aren’t smart enough to interpret Trump’s tax return turned out to be foolish.

The Awesome: Eric Trump’s Basket of Deplorables Tweet

eric-trump-arena-gaffe-twit-pic

Eric went to twitter to respond to Hillary Clinton calling half of Trump Supporters a Basket of Deplorables at a recent fundraiser. He tweeted out a photo of a totally packed arena, with the caption: “Look at the #BasketOfDeplorables in Pensacola Florida last night! What a horrible statement. #CrookedHillary”.  Good job Eric!  His father is often heard on the Stump accusing the “Bias Media” of never showing the size of the audience. Eric basked in the glory of a solid response Hillary’s comment.  That is until Mark Cuban, an outspoken Hillary Surrogate and Owner of the arena in the picture chimed in and tweeted back,“I’m pretty sure that’s our arena in Dallas Eric. #Wrong Basket”.

Ivanka… Donald Trump’s MVC.

Daddy’s Little Girl

Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka has been his most loyal surrogates from the beginning of his Presidential run through the final two weeks before Election Day.  However, her involvement as a surrogate has definitely shifted from the her peak at the Republican National Convention. Some might lead you to believe this change is due to her lack of political experience, and desire to avoid feeling the pressure of being a Candidate’s Family. I’m more of the belief that it is a strategic move for life after the election.

Ivanka is without a doubt his MVC, Most Valuable Child, on the campaign trail. Their hope is that she would be a surrogate that appeal to the Millennial, and women voters.  Her success as a top level Executive in his business would assure women that in a Donald Trump Administration women would be able to have a seat at the table.  Ivanka’s also appealed to working mothers that value the opportunity to be successful in business, and being a mother.

This was fun for a little while

Ivanka made her claim as a Surrogate for her father when she introduced him before he declared his campaign to run for president in the lobby of Trump Tower.  Her poise in the public eye was a relief for many GOP supporters that were unsure of her father’s ability to be taken seriously.  She continued to shine on the campaign trail to eventually earn a spot as the  Keynote speaker on the final day of the Republican National Convention.  As her father’s political strategy to attack anybody that disagrees with him, or accuses him of sexually assaulting them she started to take a step back.  As somebody that was constantly having to explain what her father meant to say about his past action she started to show cracks. At a Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit she opened up during a Q&A session to say,”I may have been naïve going into this but nothing in life prepares you for a parent running for the president of the United States of America nothing,”  She added, “I will tell you that the media has been vicious, and we take it personally.”  Another turning point for Ivanka was in an interview in September with cosmopolitan.com that turned confrontational when pushed on comments her father had made about childcare and maternity leave. They were questioning Donald’s comments from 2004 about pregnancy being an inconvenient thing for business. This obviously contrast Ivanka’s rhetoric from the campaign trail. She criticized the interviewer for having “a lot of negativity” in her questions, and ended the interview.

Time to go

Without a doubt Ivanka is one of Donald’s best surrogates to attract the most important demographics of voters for a victory, Educated Working Women.  She was doing a great job in the beginning. However, Donald’s offensive and basely threat to women over the campaign has started to erode some of her credibility.  I feel that she sees the writing on the wall, and wants to distance herself as to not jeopardize her standing in the business world. One that she has proven to be a success.

Melania to the Rescue… Kinda

melania-and-anderson

Melania Trump hasn’t taken on the typical role of a campaign spouse. She’s rarely seen on the campaign trail with her Husband, isn’t involved in fundraising, and hardly ever gives interviews. However, don’t let that lead you to believe she doesn’t stand behind Donald’s Campaign messaging, and rhetoric.  Two Days before the 3rd Debate Melania decided to sit down for an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper to discuss Donald’s recent controversies.  Melanie is arguably one of Trump’s most valuable Surrogate as somebody that can attest to the “Real Donald”. She can hopefully change the narrative from the man he was in the past, to the man he is today.

Standing by her man

Many people would assume that Melania would use the benefit of being Trump’s Spouse as an opportunity to attest to his behavior when he is not in front of the camera (or hot mic). Let the voting public know that Trump isn’t the sexual Deviant that he is being portrayed as. Instead, Melania doubled down on a lot of the rhetoric Donald has built his campaign message around.  She blamed the media for lying to protect the Clintons and making Donald look like somebody he isn’t.  Melania thinks the timing of these accusers stepping forward all of a sudden is suspicious, while ignoring the claim from the 2nd debate by Donald that he had never sexually assaulted a women in the past.  In response to what her thoughts were when she first saw the Access Hollywood tape, “I was surprised because that is not the man that I know.” She then went on to make excuses for why the conversation even took place by saying, “It was only a mic, and I wonder if they even knew that the mic was on, because they were kind of a boy talk, and he was led on, like egged on, from the host to say dirty and bad stuff.”  Melania admits that she was surprised by the content of the tape, but not surprised that the tape came out. She feels that the Clintons and the Media are working together to discredit Trump, and this is just business as usual.

What did we learn?

Anybody thinking that Melania would be apologizing for her husband’s comments or actions from the past got their answer in her response to one of Anderson’s questions. He asked about Donald disparaging the appearance of a woman. She replied, “Well, that’s him. He’s raw.” With that said, I doubt we’ll hear from Melania that much more before election day.

The Hail Mary Pass

An hour before the 2nd Presidential Debate Donald Trump initiated a stunt that not even his own Campaign knew was coming.  In the absence of his trusted surrogates, Trump threw what some would call a “Hail Mary”, and presented a group of Bill Clinton sexual assault accusers to endorse him as President. This stunt was a move to not only galvanize his Base, but a warning shot to The Clinton Campaign ahead of a debate that he needed to win.

He’s Calling The Hail Mary!!!

bill-clinton-debate-photo

The term Hail Mary Pass refers to any last-ditch effort with little chance of success.  Trump was coming off arguably two of the worst days in this campaign with the leaked audio tapes of him and Billy Bush’s “Locker Room Banter”. Republican Surrogates were running for the door as fast as possible. Rumors of Mike Pence stepping down as the Vice Presidential Nominee for Moral reason were creeping up.  To divert the attention from Trump being a Sexual Predator he put together a news conference with a panel of new surrogates to endorse him before the debate including Kathleen Willey, Juanita Broaddrick, and Paula Jones. These women have all accused Bill Clinton of sexually assaulting them in past, and accuse Hillary of attacking their character as the victims.  Two Clinton aides acknowledged to CNN they didn’t expect this — in all their planning and were jarred by the news. Even Trump’s own Campaign was caught off guard by this stunt.

trumps-panel-of-acusers

Ironically, Trump has been on record condemning these women in the past for their accusations. On a Neil Cavuto Show on Fox News in 1998 Trump came to the defense of Bill Clinton, “His victims are terrible. He is, he is really a victim himself,” Trump said. “The whole group, Paula Jones, Lewinsky — it’s just a really unattractive group. I’m not just talking about physical.”

He’s not done yet

As any good candidate would do with newly minted Surrogates, Trump wanted to put them up in the spot light to gain the most attention. “We were going to put the four women in the VIP box,” Trump surrogate and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani was quoted as saying by the Washington Post. “We had it all set. We wanted to have them shake hands with Bill, to see if Bill would shake hands with them.” Thankfully, the plot was nixed by Frank J. Fahrenkopf, the debate commission’s co-chairman and a former Republican National Committee chairman.  surrogates-front-row

Instead, they were seated in the front run.

Time will tell if this was a Hail Mary Pass thrown by a Candidate with nothing to lose, or just a warning shot ahead of the debate to the Clinton Campaign.  Either way, Trump proved that he’ll put anything or anybody in play by presenting these women as his surrogates.

Believe Me… I’m going to Bring in the Best Surrogates Ever!!!

Donald Trump had repeatedly proclaimed that his success over the last 40 years of Business provides him the skill set, and leadership required to make America Great Again. However, his lack of fellow CEO/Business Surrogates leads you to believe otherwise. Trump has presented a Challenger Strategy over the campaign against the Political Establishment as a whole. His plan is to gather the country’s most successful Leaders of Industry and jump start the economy. These claims would be more believable if he had some Leaders of Industry as Surrogates coming to his defense.

Andrew Kirell from The Daily Beast describes Trump’s Surrogates as, “The Trumpkins”.
Katrina Pierson, Scottie Nell Hughes, Kayleigh McEnany, and Jeffrey Lord. These surrogates have a political or PR background that won’t miss the opportunity to hit the airwaves of Radio and News Media to defend, deflect, or spin Trump’s latest gaffes. CNN personality S.E. Cupp said of Jeffery Lord last year could apply just as easily to the rest of his highly skilled, dogged fellow Trumpkins: “I don’t envy Jeffrey having to carry Donald Trump’s decidedly fetid water every day. It’s not an enviable job and he does it very well.” S.E. Cupp’s complement is a badge of honor for a political Surrogate earning their way through the ranks at the cost of their morals, but not a CEO that has to return to his corporate life the next day.

What Trump does not have is surrogates that are his equal in the Business World. Business Surrogates that can attest to the achievement he claims, and how Trump will replicate that as President. Surrogates that could explain the reason that Trump’s most recent leaked Tax Document for 1995 showing a $916 Million Dollar loss can be turned into a positive due to certain tax loopholes. Carl Icahn, a very successful business magnate, is a name Trump regularly mention as a Leader of Industry that he will lean on for Trade Deals. Unfortunately, Carl isn’t available to speak on Trump’s behalf as a surrogate during the campaign. The absence of successful business leaders as surrogates at the very least brings his business ethics, or work relationships among his peers into question.
