Part I: Short Passage Identification (30 points)

In this section of the exam you will identify 10 out of 13 passages from texts read after our last exam (i.e. from Emmeline through A Woman of Colour). Author and title must be spelled correctly for full credit. Cross out the 3 passages that you do not want me to grade.

Part II: Short Writing Assignments (40 points)

In this section of the exam you will write 4 short analyses of 4 of the 10 identified passages.

Your task here is threefold involving 1) careful attention to the language and ideas in the  passage 2) linking the passage to the work from which it is extracted and 3) connecting the ideas (and maybe even the language and imagery) of the passage to other texts read this semester.

You must write on 4 different texts and at least 3 different authors.

Part III: Short Essays (30 points)

For this section of the exam, you have TWO choices:

3 short essays worth 10 points each

This section of the exam is comprehensive and the prompts will ask you to put specific authors in conversation with one another. Again, the expectation is that you will discuss at least 2-3 writers/texts in each essay and that there will be little to no overlap between the three essays.

Total number of authors discussed: 6-9 in 2-3 paragraphs.

OR

2 essays worth 15 points each

This section of the exam is comprehensive and the prompts will ask you to put specific authors in conversation with one another. The expectation is that you will discuss at least 3-5 writers/texts in a thesis driven argument, and that there will be little to no overlap between the two essays

Total number of authors discussed: 6-9 in 4-5 paragraphs.

General Advice:

Demonstrate as much range of knowledge as you possess.  Avoid repetition within the exam as well as a reiteration of arguments you have made in other written work. As I grade, I’ll keep a running tally of the writers and texts that you address over the course of the exam. Breadth will be rewarded.
