Submit your responses on our eLC course site: Tools > Assignments

  1. A Defense of Poetry may have easily been titled “A Defense of the Imagination.” According to Shelley, what is the value of the “imagination” in a social world that increasingly values “reason” over the imagination, and the scientist over the poet? Cite at least one specific passage that you feel best represents Shelley’s defense of poetry and the imagination.
  2. Shelley is a poet and uses poetic language throughout his essay. Identify and discuss his use of the affordances of poetic language in this prose piece. Focus your analysis on a single example.
  3. Is “Mont Blanc” a meditative-lyric poem or does it reach the level of the ode? Support your assertion with evidence from the text.
