The enormity of that is conveyed in the lede of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/oct\/12\/gaokao-china-toughest-school-exam-in-world\">the story<\/a> \u201cIs China\u2019s gaokao the world\u2019s toughest school exam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first paragraph is a <strong>scene setter<\/strong>. It describes preparations across China for a single day in June when the test is given. Collective efforts focus on controlling the environment surrounding examination halls.\u00a0 Traffic is detoured, construction or any activity that might generate noise is suspended, and police patrol to avert potential disruptions. The enormity of the stakes of this test hit the reader hard.\u00a0 The imagery of an ambulance standing by is almost chilling.<\/p>\n<p>So, yes.\u00a0 I thought it <strong><em>did<\/em><\/strong> cry out \u2013 \u201cJ.C., listen to this!\u201d And the story does not disappoint. It portrays one individual\u2019s preparations for the test, confidence in taking it, and tension in waiting for the results. I won\u2019t give away the ending in case you haven\u2019t read it, but I found it incredibly memorable and thought-provoking.<\/p>\n<p>Three things drew me to this story \u2013 one being my complete unfamiliarity with the word gaokao, which sparked interest, especially in the context of the title calling it possibly the world\u2019s toughest test.\u00a0 Secondly, the deck set up a scenario of success or failure of epic proportions, sounding quite dramatic. And thirdly, we are a multicultural family with Amerasian granddaughters. The girls\u2019 maternal grandparents grew up in China and share stories of their school experiences.
