Kennesaw is your average suburb of Atlanta: the lawns are mostly green, its historic district is small but well kept, and parents are proud of the average SAT scores of their childrens’ schools. In the past 10 years, it has grown and grown well- the local university, Kennesaw State, has come to be well known for its education. The city has built beautiful new parks like Swift-Cantrell, and its younger residents attend Cobb County schools, which rank among the best in the state. History characterises the town just as much as the newly built structures, with dozens of historic buildings and battles fields, including the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

To many who live there, Kennesaw is a sleepy little town, and its more interesting past can be dusted off and thumbed through in library archives or at places such as the Southern Museum. The town has slumbered since the Civil War, which was the last time it saw any major action. It was during the Civil War that Union spies stole The General, a Confederate supply train, and turned Big Shanty upside down as people scrambled to recover the train. Eventually the train would be recovered, Big Shanty would be renamed Kennesaw, and the town would become Sleeping Beauty.
