Maggie Holland, twenty one, is a third year Environmental Journalism major at UGA. She is passionate about environmental change, as she pursues not only a degree in journalism but also working towards sociology minor and sustainability certificate. Recently being awardee a CURO research grant Maggie plans to study environmental degradation and human rights abuses while continuing to explore and learn about her passion for the environment and investigative journalism.
Joseph Carter is 37 years old from Yahoo City, Mississippi. He originally attended Mississippi State but is currently a Journalism major at the University of Georgia. While, attending Mississippi State Joseph was an English major with a deep affection and appreciation for literature. Unfortunately, Carter’s time at Mississippi State was cut short when he made the decision to join the Air Force where he would served four years as logistics in Augusta, Georgia. Carter, who is currently a senior, hopes to use his degree in Journalism to pursue a career in investigative journalism where he hopes to uncovering the world’s hidden truths. Carter also aspires to empower and protect everyday people from those who wish to take advantage of them. Curiosity, compassion and the beauty of the natural world is what inspires him most.
Claudia Miller is a 19 year-old sophomore who majoring in both Public Relations and French at the University of Georgia. She was born and raised in Atlanta, Ga and has 2 siblings and one dog named Maxie. Claudia is interested in photography and traveling, which is why she decided to study abroad in Paris, France last summer and will do so again in Cannes, France this summer. In her free time Claudia enjoys exercising, listening to music, and watching shows on Netlflix.
Mykela Lowe is a third year transfer student from Clayton State University who is majoring in Public Relations. She has a gifted eye for finding up-and-coming performance artists based in Atlanta. She aspires to use her expertise in public relations to share the talents of her clients with the rest of the world.
Kourtney Singleton is a 21-year-old public relations and political science student at UGA. She plans to pursue a career in entertainment law or as a public relations representative for an entertainment company. In her free time, she enjoys playing the piano, exploring the world of fashion, and trying different foods. Singleton’s interest in fashion has inspired her to make her own clothes for various events such as prom. If she could travel anywhere in the world, she would choose to explore Paris because of the rich culture and fashion empire.
Caroline Harty, twenty years old, is a second year at UGA. Because of her love for interpersonal relations and natural knack of connecting to individuals with immediacy, she is pursuing a degree in Public Relations with a New Media certificate. With her first semester within Grady underway, Caroline
keeps her options open to all the varying routes she could take with a Public Relations major. In her free time, she plays intramural soccer, reads books and lounges at home with her two miniature dachshunds who she loves to play with and love on.
Anna-Martin Murphy is a sophomore from Buford, GA. She chose to major in public relations because she enjoys telling stories and learning about the perspectives of others. She enjoys listening to Rainbow Kitten Surprise and spending time serving families through UGA Miracle. Murphy has always been a Bulldog fan and the opportunity to attend football games as a student was one of the many reasons she chose to attend the University of Georgia.
Emily Nalwasky is a second year student at The University of Georgia. She is a double major in public relations and women’s studies. Nalwasky enjoys playing the saxophone and different genres of music such as electronic and alternative. She is also a fan of cycling and would love to become an instructor in the near future. Her professional aspirations include becoming an attorney in human or public advocacy law or an attorney representative for companies that align with those policies. Her favorite place in the world to travel to is London due to its high-brow architecture and multicultural lifestyle.
As a second year student at the University of Georgia, Nicki Brown not only majors in journalism, but also Spanish and International Affairs. Brown aspires to work in international news after she graduates in the Spring of 2019.
In Brown’s free time she tutors for Oasis, which is a tutoring program for Hispanic students. She is also studying abroad this summer for her Spanish class in Costa Rica. Brown enjoys listening to music by local Athens Bands and has worked with the campus’ radio station WUOG.
On Jan. 15, 1997, Jessica Atwell was born in Atlanta, GA. She is the oldest of two, and her younger brother is named John. Jessica attended Etowah High School in Cherokee County, and graduated with the class of 2015. She is a second year student working towards a double major in public relations and international affairs with a minor in Spanish here at Georgia. Jessica loves to dance, listen to music, and hang out with her friends in her free time. You might also catch her around downtown at Italian spots as it is her favorite food.
Becca Beato moved from Long Island, New York to Peachtree City, Georgia when she was 11 years old. She is a third year journalism student at the University of Georgia who has written for UGAzine and currently writes for the culture desk at the Red and Black. In her future, Beato hopes to remain in print journalism, and would enjoy traveling to be a part of her career as well. She is excited to embark on a study abroad next summer in Dublin, Ireland where she will be practicing her travel writing skills. Her Twitter account is @beccabeato.
Amy Cole is a sophomore from Marietta, double majoring in theatre and public relations. She manages students productions in the theatre department, and she’s also the acting president of Lady Parts Improv. Cole likes to stage and her favorite food is a tie between tacos and boiled peanuts. Her favorite activity is crewing for shows, and she dreams of doing PR for Give Kids the World.

Mae Eldahshoury is a second year Journalism student from Alpharetta, Georgia. She hopes to build a career by incorporating her passion of social justice with her hobbies of photography, reading and making films. She aspires to travel and make documentaries while working with refugees around the world. Mae loves all kinds of music except country and her favorite artist is Chance the Rapper.
Caitlyn Richtman is a second year journalism and women’s studies major from Savannah, Ga. She currently writes for UGA’S chapter of Her Campus and InfUSion Magazine. In her free time, she can be found reading, running, and participating in what she calls “smashing patriarchy”. Richtman’s passion for feminism and social justice serves as an impact on her interest in working for a women’s magazine after undergrad.
Kristen Adaway is a third year journalism student from Covington, Georgia. She works on Pandora, UGA’s student yearbook, and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. In Kristen’s free time, she listens to music, watches Netflix and graphic designs. She wants to pursue magazine journalism and dreams of one day working at a publication like Teen Vogue.
Sehar Ebrahim is a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia studying Public Relations. She has a large family – two sisters, and many cousins from her mother’s three siblings and her father’s four. Like many other UGA students, Sehar enjoys watching sports, specifically football. Her interest in the sport encouraged her to take an internship with the Atlanta Falcons, where she currently works in the Communications Department and plans to continue with them in the coming years if she’s not traveling the globe. Shayla Strange is a third year journalism major who is enjoying her second semester at the University of Georgia after transferring from Valdosta State over the summer. She was born on May 22 in Macon, Georgia and will soon be traveling far from home for the 2017 Prague: Travel Writing study abroad program. Maddie James is a 20-year-old sophomore born in Westport, Connecticut and raised in Dallas, Texas. As a Public Relations major, Maddie is active on the Grady scene, participating in Public Relations Student Society of America and serving on their Member Relations Committee. She is an avid fan of exercise and, like a true Texas native, TexMex food. Maddie is also involved in her sorority and dance, with an appreciation for traveling the world, too.
Benjamin Richmond is a junior at the University of Georgia, majoring in journalism. He is from Cordele, Georgia, and he has a Maltese named Buttons. His extracurricular activities include working for The Red and Black, reading, and writing, his favorite being writing. Richmond hopes to one day write novels.
Cameron Keen is a third-year University of Georgia student studying both political science and public relations. The Dublin, Georgia native is a member of the prestigious Arch Society, a highly selective ambassador organization where students are given the privilege of welcoming guests of the offices of the President, the Provost, the Athletic Association, and more. Additionally, Keen is involved with the Wesley Foundation’s Lead Program mentoring younger UGA students each week. His favorite aspect of attending UGA is “the people I get to meet.” In his free time, Keen enjoys running and eating “the best bar-b-que in town” at Dawg Gone Good BBQ.
After more than two decades in journalism, Burns now serves as publisher of The Red & Black Publishing Company, Inc., an independent student media nonprofit that publishes the largest student newspaper in Georgia, provides journalism training, produces year-round daily online news, and publishes a family of specialty publications. Burns is the former editor-in-chief of Atlanta magazine and previously served as director of digital strategy for its parent company, Emmis Publishing, whose other titles included Texas Monthly and Los Angeles Magazine. The author of three books, she teaches part-time at the University of Georgia and previously taught at Emory University. She continues to work as a freelance writer and editor, contributing to publications such as The Guardian and POLITICO.
