A fire occurred in the Windfair Apartment building that destroyed 10 of 25 units on Thursday night located on the east side of Athens.

According to Captain Mary Smith, firefighters arrived at the complex at 9:05 PM where they saw residents gathered outside on the sidewalk, and “flames were bursting through the roof” as she described the fire.

No one was injured according to the fire department captain, but in the midst about 25 renters have lost all of their possessions. Some residents were able to rescue their pets, while others unfortunately were not.

Thomas Jones, a resident of Windfair building for the past three years, was able to save his two cats, Gingersnap and George. Jones does not have renters insurance. As a result, this has cost him all of his prized possessions that he will not be able to replace. “I lost everything. I am not sure what I will do next,” Jones said.

The fire is still being investigated at this time, however, Smith has said, “We do not suspect foul play.”
