After more than two decades in journalism, Burns now serves as publisher of The Red & Black Publishing Company, Inc., an independent student media nonprofit that publishes the largest student newspaper in Georgia, provides journalism training, produces year-round daily online news, and publishes a family of specialty publications. Burns is the former editor-in-chief of Atlanta magazine and previously served as director of digital strategy for its parent company, Emmis Publishing, whose other titles included Texas Monthly and Los Angeles Magazine. The author of three books, she teaches part-time at the University of Georgia and previously taught at Emory University. She continues to work as a freelance writer and editor, contributing to publications such as The Guardian and POLITICO.
