Porchfest is an opportunity for Athens residents to gather amongst their community, viewing varied performances and enriching themselves in the endless history of the Classic City.

Over local 200 artists will play on the porches of Boulevard, Normaltown, Buena Vista Heights, Cobbham, Newtown, Pulaski Heights and Reese-Hancock neighborhoods, a notable increase from the 160 performers just last year.

“The most unique part about Porchfest is the scope of it,” said executive director of Historic Athens, Tommy Valentine. “Since you have different options every hour and since people are going to make different choices, it becomes this kind of choose your own adventure situation.”

Cafe Racer, as well as various other Athens-based businesses, will be sponsoring a diverse lineup of artists – allowing admission to be completely free of cost for all attendees. The festival will commence early Sunday afternoon and the streets won’t be quieting down until 8 p.m. that evening.

Homeowners across the city volunteer their homes for the event, matching different home-types with various musical genres. At the event, I was able to witness first-hand how the citizens of Athens interact with one another, highlighted by their fellowship over listening in on local artists. I also had the opportunity to speak with Mayor Kelly Girtz outside his Pulaski Heights home, where we discussed the benefits, as well as any challenges, that Porchfest presented to Athens.

Local Athens band, Nana Grizol, performing last year on Pulaski Street at Historic Athens Porchfest, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022.
