The spunky musician and Athens local sports a loud purple shirt and green pants, and her body language is open and inviting. Her infectious giggle fills the room as she introduces herself. Joyce recalls the accidental encounter that changed the course of her life forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was down here interviewing with the school of social work for grad school and didn&#8217;t know AthFest was happening,\u201d Joyce said. \u201c[I] walked out and one of my favorite bands from high school, Five Eight, was playing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AthFest Educates is a local nonprofit organization that is devoted to assisting Athens-Clarke County schools in advancing music and arts education for students K-12. The AthFest music festival was founded in 1997, but became a part of this nonprofit in 2009 to support these endeavors. (Photo\/Melanie Levi)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jill Helme, former executive director of AthFest Educates, stepped down after eight years of employment. In January, Joyce stepped in to take over this esteemed role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we\u2019re looking for a director of a nonprofit, we\u2019re also looking for somebody that has major skills in planning events,\u201d said Alicia Nickles, longtime AthFest Educates board member and Flagpole Magazine publisher. \u201cFinding a person that knows how to do all that is a unicorn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although a major change, Nickles is hopeful in Joyce\u2019s abilities because of the new leader\u2019s personal experience with the festival as well as nonprofits. Nickles said that Joyce\u2019s two predecessors were either too festival-focused or nonprofit-focused, but she has the appropriate background to manage both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1_SuuMmRai5yjDLVnd7bJaGm0FLzX2BPB\/view?usp=sharing\">WideShotVideo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AthFest Educates donates approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/athfest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/AthFest_SponsorPacket.pdf\">$50,000 <\/a>in grants to the Athens-Clarke County School District yearly. This money is generated partially from the annual AthFest music festival and partially from its sister event, the AthHalf Half Marathon. The funds are provided to strengthen adolescents\u2019 knowledge and participation in music and arts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joyce intends to keep the festival\u2019s central cause the same, but plans to implement new ideas to promote this charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest change I want to make is putting the mission first so that everyone that shows up to AthFest, everyone that goes to the AthHalf Marathon, knows this is a fundraiser for AthFest Educates,\u201d Joyce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1VZ-U5PX2UGgWeAKE51Cl_O7z5yNkA1GI\/view?usp=sharing\">CloseUpVideo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joyce wants to involve bands in fundraising by asking them to donate the earnings from their performance or incentivizing donations with prizes. She also intends to place banners displaying the fundraiser\u2019s mission with QR codes that provide attendees with a direct link to donate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a whole, Joyce wants to make it clear that this free festival is not exactly free; AthFest Educates has a monetary goal with a mission behind it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EoGh4zd2wJhTwIBP45EwfFFUjm79UfXB\/view?usp=sharing\">MediumShotVideo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve played AthFest and I didn\u2019t know that it was a fundraiser for a nonprofit.
