The UGA Women’s and Men’s Glee Clubs will perform a spring concert at Hodgson Concert Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will be conducted by Sarah Frook Gallo, who is the Interim Associate Director of Choral Activities at UGA, along with several graduate choral conducting students.
Gallo is the main conductor of the Women’s and Men’s Glee Clubs. Both clubs are home to undergraduates who have an interest in glee. This spring concert is held to display their hard worked talents.
“This is our opportunity to perform as unique ensembles and show our skills and show what makes singing in these single voice ensembles special,” said Gallo.
The Glee clubs spent two days a week for one hour and 15 minutes working through six or seven pieces. Rayvon Deshawn, a graduate student who is helping conduct, has shared his thoughts on how much time and effort the club members put into this event.
“We don’t have the whole semester to prepare this concert. We only have a few weeks, and how can we present the best product in that short amount of time,” said Deshawn.
Both of the clubs will perform various genres. The performance will have songs ranging from Bulgarian, Latin, and Finnish. One song in particular, that is performed by the Men’s Glee Club, “Vive L’Amour” has inspired the concert’s name “Vive La Compagnie.”
When discussing why she chose that name, Gallo said, “It just reflects my hope that the music we make is all about celebrating the people that are in the room, and the people that are making the music.”
The usual attendance for these concerts ranges around 100 to 200 people.
The spring concert is free. Anyone interested in attending can find more details about the event on UGA’s Event Calendar website.

Why I Wrote the Story:
This story was an opportunity for me to share with readers about the choral music performance that took place in UGA and Athens, Georgia. I learned valuable skills on how to write a story that previews an event in non-promotional fashion, and how to report live on the day of the event.
