Introductory Reflective Essay

My coursework and project-based endeavors through the Sustainability Certificate program were fundamental to my academic experience at the University of Georgia. Through pursuing this education, I grew to understand the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability and was consistently inspired to incorporate my learnings into my future career. Upon first joining the program, I would compare myself to a seed. I had the capacity to grow into a flourishing sunflower but needed water and sunlight, or in this case, the knowledge and skillset, to unlock my full potential.

As a mere seedling first diving into the world of Sustainability at UGA, I started my coursework with LAND1500 to satisfy the ecological sphere. I had always been fascinated by the built environment, and this course enabled me to explore this interest from an entirely new perspective. I learned the concept of harmonious integration and the importance of considering the environment while planning human developments. Through various writing and design-based assignments, I grew to also understand how the built environment relates to the health and wellness of a community. The portfolio artifact highlighting this growth is my LAND1500 Final Paper which includes a comprehensive evaluation of a built environment.

After my first exposure to sustainability-based coursework, I traveled to the other side of the world to partake in field studies related to sustainable development. Through this study abroad opportunity in Australia and New Zealand, I was provided with enormous growth and a significant dose of sunlight both literally and figuratively. My perspective on the concept of “progress” evolved from an economic focus to a balanced endeavor with social and ecological considerations. I also grew to understand the idea of the QBL by using real-world applications in various cities throughout my travels. This coursework encompassed both my social and economic spheres since this education was so holistic in nature. The artifacts linked to this academic experience are my Thematic Essay and various modules highlighting key learnings from all three pillars of Sustainability.

Upon returning to classes at UGA, I was eager to continue to blossom and grow through expanding my knowledge of sustainability. I took FANR1500 as my anchor course which emphasized the interconnectedness of the QBL and the need for mindful sustainable development. Within this class, I was empowered to apply my knowledge to relevant projects and conduct my first scientific-based research. This enabled me to grow as a professional while also exposing me to challenges faced in the field of sustainability. The first artifact illustrating these key learnings is my FANR1500 final research paper which demonstrates using data to formulate relevant conclusions regarding sustainability and fashion. The second artifact representing learnings from this course is my Nike Grind case study which demonstrates an example of a brand implementing sustainable business practices in current times.

Throughout two consecutive semesters, I took the Sustainability Seminar course which exposed me to a variety of perspectives on sustainability. I was consistently inspired by the guest speakers and the admirable work they do for the well-being of our community and planet. At the same time, I also drew inspiration from the interdisciplinary group of peers who were each integrating sustainability into their education in unique ways. This course enabled us to build a diverse community and grow as a collective with shared goals. The artifacts representing these learnings are my community event reflections and final reflections from these courses.

In order to fully blossom into a magnificent sunflower, the last step I needed to take was to complete my capstone project. I collaborated with a cross-functional group of peers to work on the Bulldogs for Bats initiative. This project involved promoting bat conservation on campus by developing a digital presence and engaging with key stakeholders. Working on this real-world initiative provided me with tangible experience in web design, graphic design, and event planning. As an aspiring advertising professional, these skills were very relevant and valuable to my future career.

With graduation on the horizon, I now feel equipped to enter the world and as a fully developed sustainability professional. One might compare me to a sunflower standing tall with bright petals tilting up toward the sun. As I reflect on my time spent pursuing the Sustainability Certificate, I have come to realize the enormous role it has played in my personal and professional development. I now feel deeply connected to this field of study and look forward to future opportunities to integrate my learnings into my career. I am confident that I will carry my passions for protecting the environment and connecting with my community into my adult life.
