In Greek mythology, the concept of miasma is a figurative pollution that curses a bloodline due to an injustice done by a predecessor. I believe humankind to be suffering from its own miasma as a consequence of our unjust exploitation of natural resources. Sustainability in the modern world combats the routines that are the catalyst for humankind’s miasma. Furthermore, sustainability is showing gratitude to the environment that was gifted to us; it is living an intentional lifestyle; it is exercising delayed gratification.
Introduction to Sustainability (LAND2310) was the first course I took for the Sustainability Certificate. When asked to define sustainability in an essay, this was my response. In taking this course, I have honed my definition of sustainability to be an interdisciplinary framework businesses, governments, and individuals can implement to encourage the harmony of living things. This does not only pertain to the environment, but it extends to social justice, as well. Previously, I had not thought to include reduced inequalities, the tenth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, or zero hunger, the second, to necessarily be included under the umbrella of sustainability. This anchor course exposed this other side of the word.
Moreover, one of the more impactful moments of the class was when Former U.S. Representative Bob Inglis visited our class to speak about the carbon tax. He is striving to close the partisan gap in politics in regards to climate change by constructing green policy that appeals to Republicans. I believe politicians and business leaders have the power to evoke the most change for environmental protection. This cannot be done without a majority advocating for this issue. Therefore, it was inspiring to hear that someone is working to bridge the gap between political parties on an issue that affects everyone.
I have additionally included a lab where I was introduced to GIS software. This skill helped me land an internship where one of my tasks was to create a flood-risk map for a region of Texas.
Overall, this course helped me refine my personal definition of sustainability and taught me useful software skills that will aid me in my career path. Defining the problem is the first step in discovering a solution. Therefore, we are one step closer to eradicating the miasma polluting our planet.
Oedipus Rex play is a perfect example of the miasma theme in Greek mythology
