I never quite realized how badly I wanted to be a writer until I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls for the first time. I was a rising high school freshman and quite eager to ace my summer reading assignment. I knew I was a good writer, but The Glass Castle made me want to be a great writer.
Journalism has served a significant role in my life and continues to do so. Without the great wide world that is writing, I would never be the individual that I am so grateful to be today. The end goal for me is quite simple — I want a byline by Mia Fishman to sweep the nation. I want to be a bestselling author with a collection of novels, memoirs, articles, vignettes and more. I want each and every human being to savor my words.
I once wrote a story about women in the world of football for Sports Illustrated Kids back when I was just getting started and I interviewed the first female CEO of an NFL team, Amy Trask. When the interview came to a close she said to me, “Mia, I want you to go and pursue your dreams with every fiber of your being.” Thanks to Amy Trask, I am doing whatever it may be to do just that.
