Fall 2016 course at the University of Georgia

Next week

New online readings (last ones!) have been posted. You should complete them before Monday’s online discussion and Wednesday’s extra-credit quiz. Please note the final is scheduled for our regular class time on Friday, Dec. 2.

Extra-credit opportunity Nov. 3

UGA alum Billy Payne, chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and former president and CEO of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, will speak 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 3, at the UGA Chapel. You will receive two extra-credit points for attending. You must sign out with Prof. Michaelis at the end of the lecture.

Extra-credit opportunity on Monday, Oct. 17

The UGA Athletic Association is hosting a presentation by Dr. Richard Lapchick, the founder and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. This is a great opportunity to hear from the foremost researcher and expert on diversity in U.S. sports. The presentation is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 in the Rankin Smith Sr. Academic Center, next to Stegeman Coliseum. If you attend, you will earn two points extra credit. You must arrive by 4 p.m. and sign out with Christina at the end of the presentation to earn the extra credit.

Changes to grading

Please note in the syllabus that I have increased the number of quizzes you will take to 20. That increases the quiz portion of your overall grade to 40 percent. It also reduces the portion of your overall grade toward which the midterm and final will count. The midterm is now worth 20 percent of your grade. The final is worth 25 percent.

Extra-credit opportunity on Friday

This Friday, Sept. 30, Grady College is hosting a panel discussion about media coverage and public relations at the recent Olympics and Paralympics. The discussion starts at 8:30 a.m. in Studio 100 (bottom floor of the Journalism building). If you arrive on time and stay to the end (it should last about an hour), you will earn two extra-credit points. You must sign in with me when the discussion ends in order to receive the extra credit.
