Should You Get Genetic Testing for non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?

This year, an estimated 74,200 people in the United States will be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, the seventh most common cancer in both men and women. With an overall five-year survival rate of only 71%, this cancer poses a devastating threat to the health of thousands every year. As genetic testing technology flourishes, however, scientific advances are providing hope for lymphoma and other similar diseases. Here is everything you need to know about the groundbreaking technology and what it means for you and your family.

A 2006 study by the National Cancer Institute found that SNPs in two genes, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and lymphotoxin-alpha, were associated with a 1.31x increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma. These genes affect inflammatory and innate immune responses, which can result in patients with lymphoma struggling to fight off infections. This could make the patients disastrously sick, so doctors searched far and wide for a way to detect these genes as early as possible.

Recently, the Mayo Clinic became the first in the US to offer genetic testing for Lymphoma. While the clinic did not describe exactly what type of test this entails or how much it would cost, the director of the Center for Individualized Medicine at the Mayo Clinic has stated its appeal. “Diagnostic tests such as the Lymph2Cx test will address an unmet need of cancer patients in the U.S. and worldwide,” Dr. Stewart said. “New tests like this help us identify accurate diagnoses and treatments quickly, saving time and money, and, ultimately, transforming patient care.” By studying gene expression and mutations, doctors may be able to more clearly define which patients will respond best to certain therapies, potentially allowing them to treat patients without intrusive chemotherapy.

But we have to consider that these new discoveries still have some limitations. The research on the proinflammatory cytokosine genes listed above was associated with a marked increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but other variations that impact the trait might remain unknown. In general, more research needs to be conducted, as the researchers themselves stated that their “results require replication”. Due to the relatively new nature of these studies, genetic testing might not be the best idea for everyone, since there is so much left to learn about these genes and their impacts on non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and the results of the testing could be misleading.

Results of genetic testing for non-Hodgkin lymphoma could also have some adverse ethical consequences. Dr. Staudt, the lead author of a 2018 study from the New England Journal of Medicine, believes that lymphoma patients should discuss the pros and cons of genetic testing with their oncologist. As cancer research is still in developmental stages, there may not be drugs available for every mutation found in lymphoma patients. In this scenario, their best option for treatment could still be chemotherapy. However, for patients not yet diagnosed with lymphoma but who fear they might be susceptible to it in the future, genetic testing could help them discover if they possess the genes that are associated with an increased risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This also has ethical considerations, though, because if they find out they possess the gene, they might develop chronic stress and experience a decline in their quality of life, whereas even if they discover they don’t possess it, there are so many other branches of lymphoma that they might still become sick despite their efforts to be proactive. 

Family history does not have a strong impact on the likelihood of contracting lymphoma; it isn’t currently found to run in families, although your risk might be slightly increased if a first-degree relative has had lymphoma.Thus, you may want to get this genetic test if a parent or sibling has had lymphoma in the past. If you do test positive, however, there are a few lymphoma risk factors that you should avoid to decrease your chances of becoming ill. Medical conditions or treatments that weaken the immune system, such as HIV or post-organ transplant medicine, autoimmune conditions, the Epstein-Barr virus, a Helicobacter pylori infection, having received chemotherapy or radiation for another cancer, or having celiac disease are all associated with an increased risk of developing the condition. But because most of these factors aren’t under your control, the most important reaction to a positive test would be to see an oncologist frequently to detect lymphomatic cells ASAP.

Genetic testing for diseases is a new, potentially life-changing field, but it must continue to develop in order to fully help as many people as possible without infringing on medical and personal privacy and rights. In the case of lymphoma, it is encouraging that new tests may be able to identify the best and most effective treatments for patients, although the lack of control over developing the disease reduces the impact of proactive genetic knowledge. There is still much work to be done – but thankfully, researchers are on the right track towards a healthier, brighter future for you and everyone you care about. Make sure to keep visiting your doctors regularly, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and stay up-to-date on new medical options available. These steps will help to ensure the best outcome possible for your health and wellbeing!

Climate Simulation Reflection- Marianne Lamarche

When I played my role in the policy exercise, I felt… a mix of emotions. It was tough knowing that, as the Other Developed Nations, we were in a much more privileged position than many of the other groups. However, we couldn’t sacrifice everything we had for other nations when ours was still producing too many emissions as well. It was hard to find the right thing to do, both morally and strategically.

How did your reaction, comments, feelings; and shifts (if any) in negotiating positions evolve across the rounds and discussions?  Across rounds and discussions, I realized how much more severe the situation was than I thought. It was stressful to see how difficult it was to lower the temperature change to 2 degrees Celsius despite best efforts by almost all countries in the world.

How did your group change their ideas? Our group became more giving to other nations and willing to compromise throughout the rounds. We changed our financial donations from $1 Billion yearly to $50 Billion yearly, and we also increased our % reduction of carbon emissions from .5% to 2%.

What prompted that change? As the simulation progressed, we realized how much the developing nations really needed our help. Overall as a United Nations, we weren’t going to achieve our carbon reduction goals if we didn’t contribute more money to the global fund or increase our percent of carbon reduction. Thus, we adapted our solution to what we thought would best benefit other countries, ourselves, and the future of humanity as a whole.

In the end, do you think that emissions can be cut? I do have faith that we can reduce some of the damage we are causing to the environment by cutting emissions. Continuing with Business As Usual policies is just unsustainable, so I think we have no option but to cut emissions. However, I am unsure of how cooperative countries and their economies will be, so I fear we will not follow through will resolutions (as evidenced by the recent Climate Summit).

What were the major costs and barriers to implementation of participant proposals? The costs involve how generally expensive materials like solar panels and alternative equipment are, as well as the expenses related to afforestation. The major barrier was economic disparity between all the countries; those that most urgently needed to combat emissions also had the least money, so they had to beg the richer nations for assistance, which was often unsuccessful (especially when it came to aid from the US). Unfortunately, this is a very real problem in today’s climate negotiations.

How can we catalyze change in the US? I think catalyzing change in the US will take a combination of large-scale actions by the government and large companies, but is also highly dependent on our individual actions. We all need to participate in, and spread knowledge about, these 7 tactics I read online that instantly reduce our carbon footprint: eating less (or no) meat, unplugging our devices, driving less, not buying “fast fashion,” planting gardens, eating local/organic, and line-drying our clothes.

Clarke Central High School Outreach

Last Friday, I went to Clarke Central High School during the morning to participate in an Antibiotic Resistance lab with students from the AP Environmental Science class. I served as the research facilitator/instructor for a group of three awesome students (pictured above), showing them how we had gathered data in class so that they could replicate the experiment. We counted bacterial colonies, calculated data for the spreadsheet, smelled unpleasant fumes, discussed the findings, and got to know each other a little bit. My emotional reaction shifted from uncertainty at first that I was qualified/knowledgeable enough to lead them in this experiment to pride that I had successfully completed just that. I left feeling happy and satisfied with our results and the connection I had established with my students in such a short amount of time. 

The most notable part of the experience for me was how much better I felt I understood the content of our experiment after conducting it a second time. Getting the opportunity to “teach” it to others helped me to realize which parts I was still confused about, therefore getting the clarifications I needed and being able to put it all into a concise, clear explanation for my students. I loved using my presentation, teaching, and interpersonal skills to try to make this a pleasant and unique experience for them. 

Now that I’ve learned how useful it is for me to teach the material I’m studying, I will be able to incorporate this learning technique for my future studies in this class. I can work with classmates to reteach concepts in our own words. In addition, I appreciated this experience of working in the high school as I am interested in education as a career; I left on Friday feeling good about my path. Thank you to everyone involved who made this great outreach project possible!

Watershed Walk: Marianne’s Reflection

In this picture, we can see a sidewalk storm drain opening with a sign that says “NO DUMPING! DRAINS TO RIVER.” At first, I only noticed it because we were supposed to find it for the scavenger hunt. However, after considering it more, I realized it is highly representative of the dangers and occurrence of water contamination on our campus and elsewhere. If this signage exists, it is most likely because there has been lots of dumping of waste in the past, which has thus drained to the river and dirtied our water sources. It is important for our campus to have these labels, but it still makes me concerned about the dumping that has occurred in the past (or that will occur in the future when the sign is inevitably ignored). Too often, we do not consider how the water – and the pollutants that enter it – are cycled through our environments. However, waste doesn’t simply disappear, and it surely doesn’t belong in our rivers on campus. I hope these signs around UGA are succeeding at preventing our waste drainage, therefore protecting our water sources. This image represents our school’s awareness of water contamination risks and its efforts to decrease them, which I am so glad to have seen during our Watershed Walk field trip!

Hello! I’m so excited to be in a class with all of you, and thanks in advance to anyone who reads this post!

I don’t have that much experience with science classes beyond basic honors chem and bio in high school, as well as AP Physics. My favorite may have been physics because of its high math focus and typically macro lens. However, science has always been my toughest subject, so I feel very grateful to be in this non-science-people bio class!

In this class, I would love to discover a greater interest for biological sciences. I hope to increase my environmental awareness, and maybe learn some cool facts about genetics!

I would be so happy to participate in the outreach with Clarke Central High School students! I have lots of prior experience in programs involving tutoring/mentorship/education that I would love to contribute to this project (even if I don’t have that much expertise to bring to the table!). It would be interesting for my fellow students and me to gain experience working in science classrooms, as well as investigate the bacteria in the soil around our campus – an issue that should concern us all!

Participating in this project would help me grow in my civic engagement in a new way, as in the past, I have focused my community involvement solely in fields that I felt very comfortable and knowledgeable in. This would be a different but necessary experience, and I hope my participation would help both the high school students and our shared environment.

Within the field of biology, I’m interested in family genetics, the intersection of biology with psychology/neuroscience, and what I can do every day to protect the biodiversity around me. Since we are studying water and bacteria, I would also love to know the truth about how often/if/why we need to wash reusable water bottles if we only keep water in them — something admittedly pretty insignificant but that I’ve debated about with friends for a long time!
