About Me! – Liah Fland

Published on Author

Hi Everyone! My name is Liah Fland and I am a fourth-year Management Information Systems (MIS) major with a certificate in Workforce Diversity. I am graduating this May, and I am excited but also a tad bit worried about entering the “real” world.

A bit about my past:

I was born in the Dominican Republic and lived there for the first 3 years of my life. At 3, my parents moved to Orlando, Florida, but then moved to New York a short time after. Not surprisingly, coming from the islands did NOT prepare my parents for the cold New York winters, causing them to move back down to Georgia, where we had some family. Since then, I have lived in Suwanee, Georgia, and have always loved it.

Learning Spanish has been an up and down roller coaster for me. Since I was born in D.R., but I was so young, I learned the basics. However, when I started school in Georgia, I knew no English, which put me in the ESOL program. Through that and many years of American schooling, I lost my Spanish and English became my “first” language. Currently, I can speak, understand, read, and write in Spanish but I did practice a lot and took classes to help with that!

My College Experience:

As for my schooling, I first started at Georgia State University as a Business Economics major. Although I enjoyed being in the city, I did want the “campus feel” that UGA had as well as the rigorous academics. I wanted to experience the football games and school spirit, be in the Terry College of Business, and also have my car on campus (which I couldn’t at GSU). Because of that, I decided to transfer and officially started at UGA in Spring 2021. Since then, I have never regretted my decision. I have joined various organizations on campus such as Delta Sigma Pi (the professional business fraternity), Hispanic Student Association, and Women in Business. Furthermore, I am currently a Community Service Assistant at Creswell Hall helping freshmen!

My Internships/Jobs:

The past two summers, I had the great opportunity to participate in two internships. In summer 2021, I was an Area Manager Intern at Amazon in Orlando, where I focused on the supply-chain/logistics industry. This past summer, I was a Scrum Master Intern at Revel Systems, where I learned and practiced the agile methodology and became extremely proficient in project management for technology companies. After graduation, I will be a Transformation Delivery Advisory Associate at KPMG in their Atlanta office! There, I will be doing more project and change management for commercial, financial, and technology companies. Eventually, I do want to work in the tech industry as a project or product manager. However, I want to retire from a 9-5 job early on and rely on other sources of income instead (such as investments and real estate). Hopefully this class will help me with that!

One Response to About Me! – Liah Fland

  1. Hi Liah, we come from a very similar background growing up in the Latin culture, so I connect with you in that way. I also agree that the 9-5 job is only sustainable for a limited amount of time, so I also really want to learn about investing in properties and passive income. Looking forward to the semester!
