AI in Video Games

Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on the video game industry. From creating intelligent game characters to optimizing game development, AI has revolutionized how video games are made and played. In this essay, I will describe how AI impacts video games and provide cited sources to support my arguments.

One of the most significant ways AI impacts video games is through the creation of intelligent game characters. AI allows game developers to create non-player characters (NPCs) that can interact with the player in dynamic and realistic ways. NPCs can learn from the player’s behavior, adapt to their tactics, and even form alliances or rivalries with the player. For example, in the game Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the game’s AI system, Nemesis, creates unique enemy characters based on the player’s actions, making the game’s combat more personalized and engaging. This system allows the game to generate a nearly endless number of unique enemies, giving the player a new challenge every time they play.

Another way AI impacts video games is through the creation of procedural generation. Procedural generation is a technique where algorithms create game content such as levels, landscapes, and characters. This technique has been used in many popular games such as Minecraft and No Man’s Sky. Procedural generation allows game developers to create massive, open worlds for players to explore without having to design every aspect of the game manually. This technology also allows developers to create randomized content, ensuring that the game’s experience remains fresh even after many playthroughs.

AI also plays a significant role in game development. Game development is a complex process that involves many different components such as graphics, sound, and gameplay mechanics. AI can help streamline the development process by automating repetitive tasks and predicting how players will interact with the game. For example, AI can help game designers test different game mechanics by simulating how players will respond to them. This technology can help game developers optimize game mechanics, ensuring that the game is both fun and challenging for players.

In addition, AI plays a critical role in game analytics. Game analytics is the process of collecting and analyzing data from players to improve game performance and player engagement. AI can help game developers make sense of the vast amounts of data collected during gameplay. By analyzing player behavior, AI can help game developers identify patterns and trends that can inform future game development. For example, AI can help game developers identify which parts of the game are most challenging for players or which game mechanics are most popular. This information can help game developers make informed decisions about how to improve the game.

AI has also had an impact on the esports industry. Esports is a rapidly growing industry that involves competitive video gaming. AI can help esports organizations optimize game performance and improve player engagement. For example, AI can be used to analyze player performance data and provide insights that can help players improve their skills. AI can also be used to optimize game balance, ensuring that the game remains fair and competitive for all players.

In conclusion, AI has had a significant impact on the video game industry. From creating intelligent game characters to optimizing game development, AI has revolutionized how video games are made and played. AI has allowed game developers to create dynamic and engaging game worlds, automate repetitive tasks, and optimize game mechanics. AI has also allowed game developers to analyze player behavior and improve game performance. The impact of AI on the video game industry will only continue to grow as developers continue to innovate and explore new ways to integrate AI into their games.

  1. I really enjoy reading about these AI with video games posts. I’ve looked into it a little myself, and I’m really excited to see what the future holds with this. I enjoy playing video games in my free time, and I understand a lot of the things you mentioned about it. However, I didn’t know that AI was already being used somewhat in game development today. It’s interesting how you brought up Esports since I’m sure AI can help a lot with competing teams as well. I’m sure soon in the future, we will have AI that can help with coaching, strategies, and more than just game development!

  2. It’s cool to think how long AI has been apart of the gaming industry. Many open world games need complex AI in order to create an interactive experience for users. After reading your post I thought about all the different games that I have played and have used AI to be a big part of the game. Using AI in esports may be like you see on TV from live sport broadcasts.

  3. I completely agree with the argument that AI has had a significant impact on the video game industry. The nods to NPCs, game development, and esports are all great looks. An interesting story to look at in the gaming industry right now is the use of the GGWP platform which is AI-powered moderation for communities. GGWP allows developers to just view the overall health of their community, review incidents that were captured by the system, and understand the impact each particular player has within the community. They provide chat moderation, gameplay toxicity monitoring, as well as cheating detection. I won’t be surprised with the increase in use of AI to assist developers in the industry.

  4. Hi Mirage. I liked how you chose Minecraft and Fortnite as your two pictures for this blog, probably 2 of the most influential games ever created in the gaming industry. I agree with your point about AI’s impact on the esports industry. As the esports industry continues to grow, AI can play a significant role in analyzing player performance data and optimizing game balance, ensuring fair and competitive gameplay for all players. I just hope that game developers can use AI properly, and actually make another fun game like Minecraft or Fortnite again.

  5. Hi Mirage, I love this topic selection for your blog post! I knew that AI could be a big help in the development of video games, but I did not know that Minecraft uses elements of AI through procedural generation. I think that AI will be a game-changer for the development of video games. It will be interesting to see how AI gets more involved in video games in the coming years. Overall, nice blog post!

  6. Hey Mirage, great post! Minecraft and Fortnite are two games that I’m very familiar with considering I have younger siblings. They are so much fun. I’ve always noticed the power of AI generation in Minecraft given its randomized generation of different worlds. If you go to the edge of your world, Minecraft will generate more land through the use of AI. I’m excited to see how game development furthers through the use of AI!

  7. Hi Mirage! I liked how this post talked about AI in various parts of video games like the characters, development, and analytics. I personally really enjoy learning about AI and video games because I have noticed with some of the newer video games that I’ve played, the characters have started to become way better than before and you can change their difficulty to change up the game. I think that AI does a great job with making sure that people don’t get bored of the game even if it’s repetitive just because of all of the different options that the AI can do to switch it up. Great job!

  8. Hi Mirage! Nice original idea for this week’s post. I watch my roommates play RPG games all the time and they introduced to me the concept of an “NPC”. There seems to be countless variations of some of the games they play, and that is what you touched on in this post. I think this is one of the coolest things that people have done with AI. Good work!

  9. Hey Mirage, great post! From all the Ai capabilities that you mentioned above, I see one similarity between them all which is data. AI is nothing without data, you used the NPC example above to speak on how they gather knowledge from their environment and derive their actions from it. As our data extraction tools refine and update, we’ll be seeing greater implementations of AI and I can’t wait for it. Also, as a person who plays video games, I noticed a few of the points that you mentioned in my own experience playing.

  10. Mirage, I found this post fun to read as video games are defiantly a pastime activity of mine. I wonder if in the future there will ever be a game where the AI adapts to each player in a different way. In this scenario, everyone who played the game would have a different game layout compared to others. I know there are already games out there that change depending on what in-game decisions you make, but most of those are prescripted.

  11. Hey Mirage! I’ve found myself looking into this recently as well and was really excited by it. I’ve played video games a lot growing up but did find myself getting bored at how rigid some of the NPC’s could be. I think AI could be really interesting for that as you’ve said, it would feel more real and responsive and way less rigid.

  12. Hey Mirage, this was such a relatable topic for me. I used to play Minecraft when I was a kid and I always wondered how the NPCs were created and how levels were customized. After being on the other end, I can see how these companies utilize artificial intelligence in their design, especially video games! Another video game in which I have witnessed the work of AI is NBA 2k, for example when the computer player is guarding you they will catch on to what moves you make in order to be a better defender. Artificial Intelligence stretches across all types of games and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
