About me

Hey guys! My name is Charlie McCollough and I am a third-year student at this fine school. I come from a town called St. Marys Georgia which I will talk about later in the blog post. I am studying MIS and hoping to go to grad school for the MSBA here at UGA.

My home

My quiet town of St. Marys Georgia sits on the border of GA/FL and the coast of Georgia. This is where I was born and raised which I am very proud of and the city has shaped me into who I am today. Growing up my parents and I spent many days on Cumberland Island and the rivers of south Georgia. Growing up I learned that there is a no better place in the world than a calm ocean and a fishing rod in your hand, or the glassy water of the river getting slung off a tube by your dad who may or may not be trying to kill you in doing so. While St. Marys is ever expanding with the Trident submarine base nearby, my neck of the woods is a small calm river town. At 15 I bought a Jon Boat which is a 14ft aluminum boat with a 15-horse mercury on the back. This vessel has taken me on many adventures to the abandoned mansions of Cumberland island or a close boat ride to Amelia Island Florida which many of you have heard of.

My hobbies

I consider myself a jack of all trades and a master of none. That being said I have many hobbies that I would like to say I am good at but I may or may not be lying.

My first hobby is boating and four-wheeling which is a staple of my southern roots. I’ll attach a picture of my boat in a second. I won’t go into much detail because everyone gets what I’m saying.

Holly and my boat

My second hobby is camping/rock climbing. Over the past 11 summers, I have spent my time in North Carolina at a camp called Camp Ridgecrest, which is a Christian camp for boys. This place has made me who I am today as well. I worked there for the past three summers. I picked up rock climbing there which has taken me to a few very fun places and gyms and I continue to try to improve my strength and skills. Camping has always been a passion of mine which my friends and I do often.

Lastly, I love sports and challenging myself physically. I play tennis, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and golf regularly and I would say I am good at all except golf. I’m a work in progress. But sports give me an outlet to challenge myself and deal with anything that is going on in my life. I played high school tennis and ran XC which I still keep up with today.

My expectations

In this class, I am expecting to learn a lot in this cool setup for the class. I am very excited about conversations about new topics and getting over my fear of speaking in front of classes. For some reason, I get super nervous just responding to teachers which will get better over time in this class I presume. I am excited about what comes next in this class! Thanks for reading everyone.

  1. Hi Charlie! Nice to meet you and read your blog. It’s so cool that you bought a boat at such a young age and are extremely grateful/passionate about your hometown! I wish I could be sporty/outdoory like you! Maybe that’s something i’ll focus on this year 🙂 Looking forward to working together in class!

    • Hello, Liah it is swell to meet you as well. It seems like we have been friends for a long time.

  2. Hey Charlie, Nice to meet you. Do you have a favorite soccer team? Also, I ran XC in high school and dreaded it because I only did it for fitness, did you enjoy it?

    • Nice to meet you too man! I do not have a favorite soccer team because I am bad at soccer and I also cant stand the flopping in the pros lol. And I too hate running now but I used to back then! But I still do it for exercise.

  3. Hey Charlie! One of my friends used to have a boat similar to yours when we were in High School and it was so much to go out on during the summer. I live in Gwinnett though so the only place we could take it was the Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier which is not nearly as cool as Cumberland Island and Amelia Island. Aren’t there wild horses or something like that on Cumberland Island? I went on a boat tour through there one time when I was younger and I remember it being so pretty and I feel like there were a lot of horses but I’m not 100% sure.

    • There are wild horses on the island! they were brought over during the Carnegie steel era and then let loose after the family left the island.
