Hi Tech Trek! My name is Caroline Costa, and I am a senior (somehow) studying Marketing and Business Analytics. I grew up in Rye, NY for most of my life – apart from a brief few years in London – with my older brother, Ryan, and better adopted sibling, Hobbes. We actually got Hobbes in England, so he is a British Golden Retriever. Unfortunately, that does not mean he barks with an accent, just that he has a more stout build. My parents also like to use that as a cover-up for his few extra pounds from all of the treats and leftovers he gets.

Coming to Boston College was both an obvious choice and an impossible decision. My mom attended BC, so I have been raised with Eagle pride. However, throughout high school, I was constantly hearing my brother’s great stories from his time at the University of Michigan. Like a true little sister, I was tempted to copy his every move, following in his footsteps to study engineering at Michigan. Nevertheless, BC won me over for a handful of reasons…one being the dance community.

DOBC
One of my favorite aspects of my time at Boston College has been my involvement in the Dance Organization of BC. Growing up, I had a love/hate relationship with dance. My mom tried to put me in ballet classes 3 various times, as I quit after the annual show each time. Once she finally gave up, I conveniently decided I wanted to try dancing again. So from middle school onwards, I have done a variety of styles, ranging from hip hop, to ballet, to contemporary. Entering college, I knew I wanted to continue dancing. I joined the DOBC freshman Fall and met such a great group of dancers that quickly became some of my best friends, one of which is also in Tech Trek (hi Regan). I think it is so special that BC has so many clubs to offer, and that they serve to bring students together over a common interest. DOBC has also given me the opportunity to choreograph, which I have never been able to do before. In fact, if you are looking for something to do on February 4th or 5th, come see Regan and I dance in our final show ever :)! DOBC is over 30 girls, so you also might find out about some hidden talents other peers/friends/classmates might have.

Tech Trek
I had heard about Tech Trek at various points during my time at BC, but it was one of my professors from last semester that was the final push I needed to take this class. Professor Kristie Dickinson set time aside one day in class to discuss how she got her start in her previous career at Apple. She recounted fun memories and life-changing relationships she developed when she took Tech Trek as a student at BC herself. Though I typically would not have considered myself the entrepreneur-type, I knew I would benefit from Tech Trek after hearing how impactful various people’s stories can be. I am really looking forward to learning more about entrepreneurship as a whole, as I have not had much exposure to it before, and particularly for meeting the different guest speakers we have coming.
Current Favorites
- TV show: Ted Lasso
- AppleTV+ has won my heart with this show. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s about a US football coach (played by Jason Sudeikis) who takes a job coaching a Premier League soccer team in England. The episodes aren’t long; it’s hilarious and simultaneously so heartwarming.
- Class I’ve taken at BC so far: Design Thinking
- Professor Kristie Dickinson is one of the best professors I have ever had, and the same goes for her class. I truly have never been so happy to be in class on a Friday (senior year AND it was a once-a-week, so that should say a lot). Content wise, it was so interesting to learn about how to approach problems creatively and with a human-centered perspective.
- Candy: Kit-Kats.
- Something about the wafer…the chocolate…the everything.
- Day of the Week: Friday
- I think. It may be too early in the semester to say for sure on this one.
- Color: baby blue
- Song: Altar by Kehlani
- Artist: Ritt Momney or Holly Humberstone
- My indecisiveness is finally showing with this one.
- BC Study Spot: Chocolate Bar
- This was undoubtedly my favorite spot on campus prior to COVID dining changes. It used to serve Peet’s Coffee, which in my opinion is a far better fit for a small, coffee-shop vibe, rather than Starbucks. I loved how bustling it would be between classes. One of my favorite parts about being on campus in general here is running into friendly faces throughout the day, and that’s why I loved the Chocolate Bar so much. Although it rarely seems to be open nowadays, it will forever be my honorary study spot. Plus, scavenging for an open table between classes there was arguably one of my best talents.
- Season: Fall
- Event at BC: Showdown
- Close runner up: football games
