Another Day, Another Trump Comment Against Women

It’s safe to say that Trump’s chances of winning the 2016 presidential election have been damaged by his habitual and degrading comments against women. Mostly female voters are affecting this, as their opinions are strongest on Trump being biased against women (The Washington Post). Trump is put between a rock and a hard place here, as women’s votes are an asset to winning, and they have made up “the majority of the vote in every presidential election since 1980” (The Washington Post). I would like to argue that Donald Trump’s most recent publicized comments, the 2005 self described “locker room banter” will push many undecided female voters over the edge to not vote for him.

In my opinion, Trump’s strong suits are masked by his weaknesses, such as lack of tactfulness and untrustworthiness, shown through his recent surfaced remarks. The media is clearly attached to covering the extra baggage that comes along with Trump aside from his political ideals, shown through them digging up information on his inappropriate ‘05 comments (no comment on the details of those). The media is using junkyard dog journalism throughout this scandal (and his other scandals), as they all want to “add an element” to the story that hasn’t been covered yet. This communication tactic brings voters to see different ideas and framed displays of rhetoric that they may not have seen or thought of before. This is a problem for Trump, not only because of his rocky standing with women, but because of the way his comments are being publicized. Another interesting perspective is from Hillary Clinton’s point of view, which is seen below.

untitled-copy

The function of not only Trump’s words alone but the ways they are displayed and communicated in the media bring about a major problem. The implications? Again, a domino effect starting with likely losing vital female votes, and possibly resulting in losing the election. Yikes.

Trump Continues to Isolate Women

Donald Trump continues to isolate potential women voters as he makes excuses rather than simply apologizing. Not only are women across the nation upset with the recent release of Trump’s comments in 2005, but many are also upset with how he handled the situation during the debate.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-11-55-29-am

Is that an apology?!

Before the second debate, Trump released an apology in which he stated, “It was wrong, I was wrong, and I apologize.”  However, many people even political leaders believe that his “apology falls short.”  People all over the country, especially women feel that Trump’s apology could be best characterized as defiant. The debate would have been the perfect chance for Trump to deliver a real heartfelt apology, but instead he continuously used the same excuse, “it’s locker room talk,” to justify his actions. As we have discussed in class, in order for him to win the election he has to aim his rhetoric towards the moderate female voter. By constantly justifying the words seen in this video as “locker room talk” he continues to distance himself from potential women voters.

What he really said during the debate
imgres

If you did watch the debate you probably don’t recall Trump even apologizing for his actions and this is probably because of how sporadic and unemotional his apology was. Trump responds to Cooper, “…this was locker room talk. I’m not proud of it…I apologize to the American people. Certainly I’m not proud of it. But this is locker room talk” (debate transcript/NewYorkTimes) . Instead of simply apologizing for his words, he continues to make excuses then goes on to the subject of ISIS. Not only did he not reply to an emotional question with an emotional answer, but his words also counteracted the previous apology given.  All of this ultimately makes him appear insincere, which only helps to further push away any potential female voters.

Can this be reversed?

The real question is can Trump bounce back from this? There have been many instances through the campaign where Trump has said or done unpresidental things, yet maintained his voter base. Even if he maintains his loyal supporters, without the votes of women he has no chance to win this election.  One poll released after the video highlights that 63% of voters believe that Trump has NO respect for women. Unless KellyAnne Conway has a few tricks left up her sleeves, it is very unlikely that Trump will get many female votes this November.

Oh Donald…..

The Talk of the Town

By now, unless you are one living in a different universe, we’ve all heard about the leak from the the Washington Post pertaining to Trump and the lewd comments that were made about Women. I couldn’t scroll through my Facebook feed this past Friday without seeing something in regards to that video leak and the feelings and emotions that were brought about, especially from women, on this particular topic. You certainly have to wonder what must be going through Trumps head at this point in the game. We’re a month out from election day and something this extreme could have the potential to sway undecided voters in a direction Trumps personnel don’t want to see stray away. Many Republicans voiced their complaints about these comments, including former Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain who revoked his endorsement of Trump after hearing oft these comments.

Trump’s Response

While Trump did post an apology, a lot of people seemed to be taken back by the underwhelming sense of urgency and care that’s brought about in his apology. His use of the term “it’s just locker room” talk sparked an outrage on social media. But what’s more interesting and intriguing to me is how Trump rallied together a group of apparent women who claimed to have been raped or assaulted by Bill Clinton, Hilary’s husband and former President. While it’s hard to tell if anything will actually come of that rebuttal from Trump, I’d argue it was a a pretty strategic move on his part because it helps shed light on another issue that may not be brought to the forefront at all given the climate that the media is taking towards Trump at this stage in the race. Many people will argue that “oh well Bill isn’t the candidate who is running, so why are we pinning Hillary by association?” While I do see where voters come from with that, I think it’s important that we shed light on how much of a “team” Hilary and Bill have been all these years. Bill has had a large influence on Hilary and she has always “stood by his side” even through all the scandal. Dr. James Dobson, in my opinion, shares great perspective and insight on this particular situation and really helps back up the argument I’m trying to make here.

So what will come of this?

While I in no way condone Trump’s actions and words from the 2005 video (it’s actually very revolting and disgusting to hear from a potential commander in chief), I think it’s important that we examine how much of this issue is going to be strictly driven by the power and appeal to emotion, especially from a media standpoint. We’ve already seen how much the media has blown this topic up. Just look at the debate from last night! Within 5 minutes of the debate, Anderson pulls out the machine gun and fires right at Trump with the tape question and spends the next 25 minutes of the debate questioning him on that. Now don’t get me wrong again, I’m not condoning his actions at all, but it was astonishing to me how much time was spent on this topic in last nights debate. And the moderators certainly were not going to give up on it, especially when he kept trying to steer the question in another direction.

So, what do the voters think now?

A recent poll shows Clinton increasing her lead by 11 points. It’ll be interesting folks.

For the record, I’m just going to leave this article from someone I look up to, Jerry Falwell Jr. who’s the President of Liberty University. He makes a very interesting and what I saw as a thought out opinion towards this. Both Jerry and Dobson throw out some intriguing and what a lot would say, shocking insight on the current state of Trump.

Is Apologizing Enough?

women-for-trumpComments About Women

After Donald Trump’s comments in footage from 2005 were released this week, women all over the country have seemingly reached their limit on what they can withstand from Mr. Trump in terms of his treatment of women. He claimed that his comments like: “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful- I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet,” “And when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything,” and “all I can see is the legs.” In response to the release of the footage, Trump claims that it was just “locker room banter,” making some women feel even more disgusted.

Beyond the Female Vote

In response the release of Trump’s 2005 comments, CNN reports that “Even Terry Gainer, a former US Senate sergeant at arms who rarely makes political comments, emailed CNN to say, ‘It is not just woman who should shun Trump. Any gentleman, every husband, each father of a daughter, bother of a sister and sons must be outraged.’ Now, instead of it being obvious just women to not vote for Trump, even Republicans are claiming that everyone, regardless of gender, should be ashamed to support Trump.

Apology Accepted?

apologyFor the first time in his campaign, Trump apologized for the things he said, saying “anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am.” Responding in one of the ways presidential candidates might in a situation where they have made bad personal choices, he claims that his statements weren’t his true self and therefore should be excused. However, this “apology” isn’t what female voters- or anyone, frankly- are hoping for. Because of his failure to confront an emotional issue with an emotional, heartfelt apology, there are numerous Republican leaders (listed in this article) who have either said they will not vote for or removed endorsements for Trump- some have even asked that he step down as a presidential candidate. After the results of tonight’s debate, we will find out if America has truly accepted Trump’s “apology” or merely takes it as a desperate attempt to stay in the race.

Despite how the country continues to deal with Trump’s comments and response to them over the next week, the incident has without a doubt impacted his support from women, but likely many other voters’ support, as well.

Are you not entertained?

Trump today made the comment that any disparaging comments he made towards women in the past were for the purpose of “entertainment”. He added that “There’s nobody that has more respect for women than I do” which in itself is ironic because he is the only thing standing in the way of the first female president of the United States. Trump’s problems with women have been widely circulated and this isn’t bound to help him in any way. If the attacks were limited to a certain instance, that would be easier to explain. But years of comments are following him and with as many as he is responsible for, it becomes increasingly difficult to explain how fat shaming a women at 3 am or his comments about Megan Kelly being affected by menstruation.

Women’s opinions of him dropped sharply after the first debate in which Trump came across as hostile. “Twenty-seven percent of likely women voters said the debate made them think worse of Trump. Meanwhile, nearly a third, or 30 percent, said their opinion of Clinton had improved…”. This all proves the original point that Trump saying all these things may have been entertainment for him but no one else seemed to enjoy his brand of entertainment. He constantly turns women voters away and this latest stunt is sure to anger the largest group in America even more.

This is a problem for him especially because he knows that suburban college educated women are a key demographic that he needs to do well with in order to stand a chance in states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Carolina. He needs to realize how delicate of a position he is currently in. Go too harsh and he runs the risk of coming across as sexist, however his ego and lack of experience may point to the fact that he is very likely to try to make a drastic change anytime soon.

Attempts to Win Back the Female Vote

160819195354-kellyanne-conway-donald-trump-split-large-169Trump’s Campaign Manager to the Rescue

In August it became evident that something had changed in the Donald Trump campaign. Trump shocked people across the nation as he began to appear more presidential than ever before.  Trump himself has not changed, but rather his campaign manager. His new manager, Kellyanne Conway has a tough road ahead of her as she tries to help Trump “woo women” voters.

Conway Manages Trump’s Crises

Conway has not been successful in changing Trump’s attitude nor comments towards women, but she has worked to counteract them. The most recent crisis Conway has managed occurred six days after the first presidential debate, where Trump once again isolated possible women voters as he attacked former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado.  The campaign tried to counteract his comments with the release of a new ad, “Motherhood,” starring Ivanka Trump. To see the ad click here. The Washington Post describes this latest ad as, “the most overt appeal yet to women voters…”

Trump’s Latest Ad

This ad mainly targets female voters as it shows Ivanka taking on the task of being both a provider and a mother. She uses powerful language such as, “the most important job any woman can have is being a mother, and it shouldn’t mean taking a tax cut,” and “he will provide tax credits for child care, paid maternity leave, and dependent-care savings accounts,”
screen-shot-2016-10-04-at-10-21-10-am to appeal to the women voters. Whether you believe her comments or not, you can’t deny that the adorable children appeal to your emotions. According to Trent and Friedenberg political ads often serve a variety of functions, but I believe that this ads’ main objective is to redefine Trump’s image. This is supported by  both the timing of the ad and the rhetoric used within it. Ivanka successfully fulfills her role as a surrogate in this ad, however this one ad can’t undo every sexist comment or action Trump has made. But the creation of this ad is a good first step in appealing to women voters.

Can Trump Win Women Over?

The Big Question: Will women vote for their same gender nominee, or side with Trump?

Demographically, Trump has set a clear trend for gaining male votes, but needs to flip the audience to females to increase his chances of taking office. Why are fewer females that are siding for him? An obvious point to this stance is rooted in the media’s display of how he has treated women during his time as the republican nominee (and who knows, maybe before), or how he has at least publicly made comments that bring women down.

Interestingly enough, “Four years ago, Romney carried this demographic [white women with college degrees] over President Obama, 52 percent to 46 percent, according to exit polls.” (The Washington Post).

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-has-a-challenge-with-white-women-you-just-want-to-smack-him/2016/10/01/df08f9ee-875b-11e6-a3ef-f35afb41797f_story.html

Trump just cannot seem to get these women’s attention, and understandably so. Note below what he had to say via Twitter three years ago and one year ago, and it’s interesting to note how the continuation of comments like this during his tenure have changed women’s political stance.

Trump must also feel the need to positively portray his viewpoint of women through things like his ad campaign featuring his daughter (a business woman) to explain his support for a workforce in which women are treated as that of men. “The ad campaign, called “Motherhood,” will air this week nationally and in swing states on women-focused cable channels” (The Washington Post).

The list goes on as to what Donald Trump has stated about women in his past, present, and likely in his future. In the long run, this has probably caused him to lose a chunk of women’s votes, which are vital votes for the current presidential election. Whether or not he wins some votes back is up to the people, but either way, the female vote for Trump is an interesting statistic to monitor as time goes on.

Trump’s Rapport with Women is About to be Nonexistent

How far will he go?

At the rate this campaign keeps going, it’ll be shocking if Trump can win over the hearts and votes of women. As a male outsider looking in, it’s pretty astonishing seeing some of the things that have come out of Trump’s mouth so far pertaining to women. I am no moral compass or ethics administrator by any means, but I’d say it’s becoming a safe bet that the vote count coming from Women in November for the ole Donald may be pretty slim. For example, voters such as Patricia Bennett from Pennsylvania commented on Trump’s comment on Hillary’s stamina from the most recent debate quoting that “Why doesn’t he just say she needs more testosterone…..it’s incredibly distasteful and it doesn’t stop.”  As all the cool kids seem to say these days, Trump literally has “no chill.” He’s a loose cannon, especially on his twitter page:

2015-07-31-1438300953-7810257-trump

But it doesn’t stop there, friends.

Demeaning female ‘Apprentice’ Contestants

We could talk for hours about countless more examples of ways that Trump has dug his own grave pertaining to women. I’d love to talk about the whole Alicia Machado scenario, but let’s leave that for another day. As of today, October 3rd, one of the hot topics coming from the Associated Press is that Donald Trump Demeaned female “Apprentice” Contestants. We all know that Trump was quite the reality TV star for a portion of his career (I’ll shamefully admit my mom and I used to watch that show pretty religiously), but what seems to have gone on behind the curtain and off the record is what news outlets and the media are raging about right now. According to an article published by the Associated Press today, “Trump called for female contestants to wear shorter dresses that also showed more cleavage, according to contestant Gene Folkes. Several cast members said Trump had one female contestant twirl before him so he could ogle her figure.” One woman contestant even stated that “We were in the boardroom one time figuring out who to blame for the task, and he just stopped in the middle and pointed to someone and said, ‘You’d f*** her, wouldn’t you? I’d f*** her. C’mon, wouldn’t you?’…….

Should we overlook it?

Folks I’m in no way trying to say what you should and shouldn’t believe, but those reports above coming from the “Apprentice” might raise your eyebrows a little higher. Even before this report, 27 percent think less of Trump after the first debate took place. I think Trump has himself a big mountain to climb here, but let’s face it, if he keeps tweeting this kind of stuff, it’s gonna be a high climb.

Should it be Mr. Piggy?

Donald Trump and Miss Universetrump-and-women

In Monday’s Presidential debate, Donald Trump was again called out for his treatment of former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado. He reportedly called her sexist names like “Miss Piggy,” “Miss Housekeeping,” and “Miss Eating Machine.” See this video to watch Alicia Machado’s perspective on his actions. Hillary Clinton brought up the controversial issue, playing on the fact that the college-educated female vote is a group on which Trump should be focused during this election.

The Female Vote in 2016

According to Brookings, “white college-educated women could be Trump’s Achilles heel.” He depends on them so much that “even a supersized turnout of working-class white men would not be nearly enough for Trump to win the election.” We have discussed in class lecture that throughout history, there has always been a targeted group of voters on which candidates rely. For 2016, this is both African Americans and college-educated women. After his performance in this week’s debate, it’s not looking like Trump is going to gain the support he needs from college-educated women. The media backlash of more women speaking on how Trump has treated them surely doesn’t help his case. Alicia Machado has even reported that she has not be paid by the Clinton Administration to speak against Trump, which adds even more validity to her experience.

Mr. Piggy

As evidence from his actions toward women who participate in pageants like Alicia Machado and his treatment of other women on numerous occasions, it’s obvious that Donald Trump isn’t trying to gain women as a part of his voter base. Rather than his name for Mrs. Machado, it’s looking like we should refer to him as Mr. Piggy. For a presidential candidate who needs the support of college-educated women trumpto win the election, Mr. Trump has failed to value the contributions of women in this country, including his experienced opponent Secretary Hillary Clinton. After repeatedly interrupting her throughout the entire debate, but especially while she discussed the issue here, Trump confirmed women’s beliefs that he does not value them as individuals worthy of respect and dignity.
